Puppy dies in hot car
Ontario, CA (US)

Incident Date: Monday, Jun 20, 2011
County: San Bernardino

Disposition: Alleged

Alleged: Chang Qui

A 19-year-old woman was arrested in San Bernardino County for allegedly leaving her golden retriever puppy in a hot car while shopping at the mall, police said Wednesday.

The dog was left in the woman's BMW for hours with no ventilation or water during a 90-degree day in Ontario, police said.

Security guards at Ontario Mills Mall spotted the 1-year-old golden retriever inside a locked BMW in the parking lot just before 7 p.m. Monday.

Authorities removed the dog but not in time to save its life, said Officer Anthony Ortiz of the Ontario Police Department.

The puppy was taken to an emergency pet clinic where it was euthanized after veterinarian officials found it had suffered brain damage and heart and lung problems.

Police Officer Dereck Anthony tells the Riverside Press-Enterprise that Chang Qui, of Beijing, China, was arrested on and booked on suspicion of animal cruelty.

With the weather warming up, authorities have been ramping up efforts to warn the public not to leave pets and children alone in cars.
