The New Jersey Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Police (NJ SPCA) is investigating the brutal killing of a 2-week-old pit bull puppy on July 26 at the 19 Express gas station on Routes 1/9 North in the Avenel section of Woodbridge.
Between 11:30 a.m. and noon, a vehicle believed to be a black Buick Rendezvous caught on surveillance video drove into the gas station and parked on the side of the building.
The vehicle was occupied by four people, some of whom made several trips into the store to purchase drinks. During this time, a witness could hear what was described as whining coming from the vehicle.
A female later was seen getting out of the vehicle crying and holding a small puppy that was alive and in distress.
The puppy had a massive stomach wound that was consistent with a knife cut on its underside, exposing its internal organs.
Witnesses said the black vehicle sped off and on Routes 1/9 North, although the female was left behind with the injured dog.
The dog died from its injuries and was left on the ground at the gas station. The female later was picked up in what was described as a dark-colored hatchback vehicle. It was occupied by a male driver and last seen leaving the area on East Woodbridge Avenue.
A reward has been offered by the SPCA Police, as well as volunteers at the Woodbridge Animal Shelter, for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the individuals involved.
Anyone with information is asked to contact Officer M. Azzarello of the NJ SPCA at 800-582-5979.
