Suspect(s) Unknown - We need your help!

The Dover Police Department is conducting an investigation into the death of a cat that occurred Friday, Aug. 19.

The cat was discovered in the parking lot of the Cocheco Valley Humane Society with significant trauma and died a short time later. Video surveillance in the area revealed that at approximately 11:12 a.m., the occupants of a gray four-door sedan, possibly a Chevy Cavalier, entered the lot of the Cocheco Valley Humane Society, reversed direction, stopped the vehicle and let the cat out of the car. The vehicle then drove off and while doing so, the rear tires of the vehicle struck the cat.

The investigation is currently being conducted as cruelty to an animal, however, the intent of the driver will be significant in determining what if any charges are brought. Dover Police Capt. Bill Breault said the Humane Society was open when the driver brought the cat there and it is not known why the person did not bring the cat inside to surrender it since that may have been the original intent.

The trauma to the cat from the vehicle is what killed it, Breault added. The cat was a male, about 5 months old and black. The animal was wearing a green and white flea collar and appeared to have been adequately cared for.

Police are requesting the public's assistance in identifying the driver and occupants of the vehicle. If you have information, please call the Dover Police Department at 603-742-4646.
