A Salt Lake City man was charged Thursday with stabbing a dog to death and trying to stab a woman to death during a rampage in a West Valley City home earlier this week.

Kirk Heath McDougal, 33, faces a first-degree felony charge of attempted murder and a third-degree felony charge of torture of a companion animal, charging documents state.

The woman told police she was visiting a friend's home near 3100 South and 6400 West on April 4 when she was left alone with McDougal. He then started yelling that he and she were going to hell and that he was going to stab her to death, charging documents state.

McDougal then grabbed a kitchen knife and started running toward the woman. She was able to escape into a bedroom and lock the door. She then went into a bathroom in the bedroom and locked that door too, charging documents state.

The woman told police she heard the dog, a terrier, yelp. She then waited in the bathroom for a while until she was sure McDougal had left the house.

When she came out of the bathroom, she saw the dog lying on the floor in a pool of blood with the kitchen knife in its back, charging documents state.

West Valley City police later located McDougal yelling on the porch of a nearby home with his pants down, charging documents state. He goaded police officers by slapping his buttocks. Police arrested him.

McDougal is also charged with criminal mischief and lewdness, both are class B misdemeanors.
