When news broke several weeks ago of the .

One Moncton man has taken one step further to ensure that the person who abandoned the puppies is found and convicted for his actions.

This Moncton resident, who has chosen not to be named, is offering a $1,000 reward to anyone who can provide the NBSPCA with credible and incriminating information behind who abandoned the puppies on the roadside.

According to the executive director of the Moncton SPCA, Nanette Pearl, this generous benefactor got wind of the puppies' story and claimed it was "the worst thing he had ever heard."

"It's a local concerned animal lover. He saw the story and immediately contacted us," says Pearl, who adds that the Moncton SPCA has worked closely with the NBSPCA to ensure that the man could indeed provide this generous reward. The NBSPCA will be involved in deciding who will receive the reward.

"He's really enthusiastic and he really wants to do his part. He was appalled by it."

Pearl urges people to only call in with serious tips, due to the large number of screening and investigating that the NBSPCA officers will need to conduct. She also adds, however, that any credible tips could help to make strides in the investigation.

"If they saw the incident happen, if they think they saw the incident happen, if they know somebody who might be responsible for having placed this box, or if they have any information on the mother of these puppies, anything that could lead to the identification of the person who did this," says Pearl.

The mother of the abandoned puppies has been a focus of interest and concern over the last few weeks.

"We're concerned because she's obviously not spayed, and these puppies were far too young to be taken from their mother, meaning she could still be full of milk, which could lead to mastitis."

Canine mastitis is an inflammation of breast tissue, with symptoms that can include swollen and inflamed breasts, changes in breast colour and texture, discharges from the breast, lethargy and loss of appetite.

Pearl adds that anyone who could abandon the seven puppies obviously has no interest in caring for their mother.

"We don't even know if she's alive. The fact that this was their answer to her having puppies is just appalling. If they're willing to throw away seven little lives, how are they treating one life?"

Pearl believes that if caught, the NBSPCA will pursue the fullest extent of charges related to animal abandonment, cruelty, neglect, and "anything else they could slap on there."

"Nobody should be able to get away with disposing of a life like it's a box of garbage," she says. "If this can be followed through, it sends a powerful message to the community that we care, that we will not accept something like this."

Pearl adds that the community response has been remarkable, and that in itself sends a message to the culprit behind this crime.

"It tells the people who did this that this behaviour is not acceptable. It's a shame that something negative has to happen for something positive to happen."

Pearl says that tips can be given anonymously if people are hesitant to reveal their identities. She says that at this point in time, any tips given are not going to be exposed to the public.

She hopes that the cash reward will work as an incentive for anyone who possesses any information.

"I would like to think that somebody would just come forward because it's the right thing to do, but oftentimes the reward aspect does work well."
