Six animals found dead in abandoned home
Martinez, GA (US)

Incident Date: Saturday, Jul 2, 2011
County: Columbia

Charges: Felony CTA
Disposition: Alleged

Alleged: Mark Stephen Robinson

An Aiken County man was recently charged in the death of several pets he left at his former Martinez home with little food and water.

Mark Stephen Robinson, 54, was charged with aggravated cruelty to animals. He is being held in the Columbia County Detention Center on a $5,100 bond, according to jail records.

On July 2, Aiken County police asked Columbia County deputies to check on Robinson at his former home on Winchester Trail. Robinson left a note at his barn stating he was going to the Martinez home to die, according to a Columbia County Sheriff's office incident report.

When deputies arrived at the home, they noticed a foul smell coming from inside and a back door unlocked. Inside, police found three dead dogs and three dead cats, the report stated. There was no sign of Robinson.

On Friday, Robinson was arrested at the uptown location of the Charlie Norwood VA Medical Center in Augusta, Columbia County sheriff's Capt. Steve Morris said. He also is wanted for a property crime in Aiken County, Morris said.

Robinson and his wife moved from Martinez to Aiken in June. No animals are allowed at their new home, so they left the dogs and cats at the Martinez house, Morris said.

Robinson's wife said she was sending food and water with her husband, who worked in Richmond County. But when police went into the house, they found no water and very little food, Morris said. The electricity was cut off to the house on June 3.
