CONVICTED: Was justice served?

Please vote on whether or not you feel the sentence in this case was appropriate for the crime. (Be sure to read the entire case and sentencing before voting.)

weak sentence = one star
strong sentence = 5 stars

more information on voting

When you vote, you are voting on whether or not the punishment fit the crime, NOT on the severity of the case itself. If you feel the sentence was very weak, you would vote 1 star. If you feel the sentence was very strong, you would vote 5 stars.

Please vote honestly and realistically. These ratings will be used a a tool for many future programs, including a "People’s Choice" of best and worst sentencing, DA and judge "report cards", and more. Try to resist the temptation to vote 1 star on every case, even if you feel that 100 years in prison isn’t enough.

Case #17932 Rating: 2.0 out of 5

2 dogs beaten with hammer
Rudy, AR (US)

Incident Date: Thursday, Jul 8, 2010
County: Crawford

Disposition: Convicted

Defendant/Suspect: Glen Edward Vandagriff

A Rudy man avoided potential prison time after reaching a plea bargain with the Crawford County Prosecuting Attorney's Office in an animal-cruelty case.

Glen Edward Vandagriff, 66, pleaded guilty to two counts of aggravated cruelty to a dog, cat or horse and one count of first-degree terroristic threatening Friday.

He received a five-year suspended sentence on each charge. The sentences will run concurrently. He also was ordered to pay $2,000 in restitution, payable to Shana's Last Chance Dog Rescue.

Vandagriff was arrested July 8, after sheriff's deputies responded to a call at 7910 Hobbtown Road that he was beating two cocker spaniels with a hammer, according to a Sheriff's Office incident report.

When deputies arrived, they discovered one dog with blood coming from its nose - that dog survived - and another lying in the backyard, unable to move, whining, with labored breathing. That dog was euthanized, according to the report.

Vandagriff approached the deputies in the yard with an item in his hand - later identified as pliers - which he refused to drop as he continued to walk toward the deputies and was stunned and taken into custody, according to the report.

When Vandagriff was examined by a forensic psychologist several months after his arrest, he told the examiner he had no memory of the event, but said he might have done it, according to a forensic report.

Note: Classifications and other fields should not be used to determine what specific charges the suspect is facing or was convicted of - they are for research and statistical purposes only. The case report and subsequent updates outline the specific charges. Charges referenced in the original case report may be modified throughout the course of the investigation or trial, so case updates, when available, should always be considered the most accurate reflection of charges.
