Savannah Animal Services Director Charlie Nickle reported this morning that 8 dogs were seized as part of an animal cruelty investigation that has been ongoing for more than a week.
According to Nickle, last Sunday, a resident on Jill Street had reported an emaciated dog that had wandered onto their property. Savannah Police responded to the call and then requested the assistance of animal services.
Within a week, the department then received an anonymous phone call that more dogs in similar weak and emaciated conditions were chained and penned up at 165 Sutton Street.
When animal services arrived, Nickel said that the odor of urine and feces was overwhelming.
Among the malnourished dogs, the carcasses of two dead chickens were also found.
Savannah Animal Services removed eight malnourished dogs and one chicken that was still alive. According to Nickle, there were other animals also present on the property, but their slightly healthier demeanor did not provide enough grounds to warrant intervention by the department.
Nickle reported today that Savannah Animal Services is still preparing a report against the animals' owners and that the Savannah Police Department would investigate further. References |
