Police officer faces animal cruelty charges
Espanola, NM (US)

Incident Date: Thursday, Mar 24, 2011
County: Rio Arriba

Disposition: Alleged

Alleged: Unnamed Police Officer

An extreme case of animal cruelty in Rio Arriba County could result in charges against an Espanola police officer.

A dog named Jack, was brought into Espanola Animal Humane Thursday.

The unnamed officer said the dog had been in his yard in Chimayo for six weeks after being hit by a car.

The shelter said more than four inches of exposed bone was visible on the dog's front leg and it had to be amputated.

The humane society is pursuing felony neglect charges, but first must prove the dog belongs to the officer who turned him in.

Note: Classifications and other fields should not be used to determine what specific charges the suspect is facing or was convicted of - they are for research and statistical purposes only. The case report and subsequent updates outline the specific charges. Charges referenced in the original case report may be modified throughout the course of the investigation or trial, so case updates, when available, should always be considered the most accurate reflection of charges.
