more information on voting

When you vote, you are voting on whether or not the punishment fit the crime, NOT on the severity of the case itself. If you feel the sentence was very weak, you would vote 1 star. If you feel the sentence was very strong, you would vote 5 stars.

Please vote honestly and realistically. These ratings will be used a a tool for many future programs, including a "People’s Choice" of best and worst sentencing, DA and judge "report cards", and more. Try to resist the temptation to vote 1 star on every case, even if you feel that 100 years in prison isn’t enough.

Dog and puppies found malnourished, one dead
Adrian, MI (US)

Incident Date: Tuesday, Feb 22, 2011
County: Lenawee

Charges: Misdemeanor
Disposition: Convicted

Defendant/Suspect: Sylvester Wesson, Jr.

Case Updates: 2 update(s) available

The discovery of a malnourished dog and seven puppies in a backyard pen at an Adrian home brought the property owner to Lenawee County District Court on Friday for arraignment on an animal cruelty charge. Sylvester Wesson Jr., 53, could face up to a two-year prison term if convicted of the felony.

Acting on a tip, an animal control officer from the Lenawee County Sheriff's Department found a chocolate Labrador retriever and her puppies locked in a pen on Addison Street on Feb. 22, said Undersheriff James Anderson. One of the puppies was dead. The officer reported there was no food or water in the pen and there were obvious signs the dogs were malnourished and dehydrated.

The puppies and their mother were immediately taken to the Lenawee Humane Society shelter for care, Anderson said. The mother gained 9.2 pounds in the first eight days she was at the shelter, according to the officer's reports. The six surviving puppies had gained one to two pounds each.

Anderson said a warrant was sought for Wesson as the property owner although he claims the dogs were owned by another person. Wesson remains free on personal recognizance pending a preliminary examination on March 28.

Case Updates

An Adrian man convicted of leaving a dog and seven puppies without food or water was ordered not to have any pets or animals during a one-year probation period.

Sylvester Wesson Jr., 53, was sentenced Monday in Lenawee County District Court for a reduced misdemeanor count of animal cruelty he pleaded no contest to on May 5. A felony charge was dismissed.

A chocolate Labrador retriever and seven puppies were found in a backyard pen on Feb. 22, according to a Lenawee County Sheriff's Department animal control officer who searched Wesson's Addison Street property. One of the puppies was dead, he reported. The other dogs have recovered from malnourishment and have been adopted out.

Judge James E. Sheridan also ordered Wesson to pay restitution for the dogs' care at the Lenawee Humane Society and to pay a $75 fine and $477 court costs.

An Adrian man charged with starving a dog and its seven puppies last winter was found guilty of a reduced misdemeanor Thursday after pleading no contest in Lenawee County District Court. Sylvester Wesson Jr., 53, remains free on personal recognizance pending sentencing on June 13.

Judge James E. Sheridan found Wesson guilty of the animal neglect count, carrying a maximum 93-day jail term, after reviewing a Lenawee County Sheriff's Department report. An animal control officer reporting finding the chocolate Labrador and seven puppies penned in the backyard of Wesson's Addison Street home on Feb. 22. There was no food or water available and one of the puppies was dead, the report said.

The dog and all six surviving puppies rapidly gained weight after being taken to Lenawee Humane Society shelter, the officer reported. All of the dogs were adopted out after Wesson waived his rights to them.

Wesson was originally charged in March with a felony animal cruelty count carrying a maximum two-year prison term.
