The owner and employees of a Poughkeepsie pet store will face several charges of animal cruelty and selling sick puppies Tuesday in Town of Poughkeepsie Court, according to an investigator with the Dutchess County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.
Senior Humane Law Officer Jami Landry said the staff and owner of Pet Fashion, in the Poughkeepsie Galleria, were charged with six counts of animal cruelty and six counts of selling diseased animals, all misdemeanors.
Pet Fashion is owned by Saddraqq Pets Inc. of Poughkeepsie, and opened in the mall in June. Saddraqq Pets owner, Victoria Addino, of Westchester County, said, "I believe the ASPCA is doing their job."
She said she is waiting to hear what the investigation found and is hoping "we'll be able to move on from this."
Seven pets were seized from the pet store on Feb. 19, according to Joyce Garrity, the executive director of the Dutchess County SPCA, whose agency launched an investigation after receiving complaints.
The SPCA is asking anyone who may have purchased a puppy with an illness from Pet Fashion to contact them at (845) 452-7722 extension 4.
Case UpdatesThe owner of Pet Fashions and six employees, including the district manager, were arraigned Tuesday in Town of Poughkeepsie Court on a total of 70 charges, including animal cruelty, forgery and selling unfit puppies.
The Dutchess County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals announced the additional charges today, alleging the pet store sold puppies with contagious illnesses and provided inadequate puppy care.
The breakdown of charges include:
" Thirty-six misdemeanor counts of animal cruelty;
" Thirty misdemeanor counts of selling diseased animals;
" Two counts of second-degree forgery, a felony and two counts of criminal possession of a forged instrument, felonies charged to the store's district manager, Tabatha Cannon, of Poughkeepsie.
The Dutchess County SPCA claims Cannon forged medical documents relating to the care of animals at the Poughkeepsie Galleria store, which is now closed, the nonprofit animal care group said in its release today.
On Feb. 19, seven puppies were seized by humane law officers from the Dutchess County SPCA. The puppies were seen by a veterinarian and were determined to be ill. Two were in serious condition and required emergency medical care, the release said.
The investigation into the puppies' condition was sparked by complaints that Pet Fashions knowingly sold animals showing signs of illness.
The owner of the store, Victoria Addino of Westchester County, signed all seven puppies over to the Dutchess County SPCA. The puppies have regained their health. They remain in the care of the DCSPCA but they have all been adopted. | Source: poughkeepsiejournal.com - Mar 11, 2011 Update posted on Mar 11, 2011 - 11:37PM |
