A 38-year-old drunken Anderson man was arrested Wednesday for beating a puppy so badly he broke its ribs and its leg, police said today.
A woman who lived on Balsam Lane called 911 around 5 p.m. saying Michael Charles Robbins was in her yard and refusing to leave. She told dispatchers he began beating his puppy, Anderson police said.
The beating was so bad he broke the dog's ribs and one if its leg, police said. The gender, breed and name of the dog weren't available this morning.
When officers searched Robbins, they found a replica pistol tucked into the waistband of his pants and a concealed dagger, Anderson Police Capt. Robert Kirvin said.
Robbins was extremely drunk, Kirvin said.
He was being held at the Shasta County jail this morning on suspicion of public intoxication, animal cruelty and weapons violations. His bail is $10,000.
The pup was taken to Gateway Animal Clinic in Anderson for treatment, Kirvin said.
The pup's condition wasn't available this morning.
Case UpdatesA transient who pleaded guilty in April to felony animal cruelty for kicking a 3-month-old puppy and breaking its leg was arrested Thursday night after allegedly stabbing another transient outside Walmart in Anderson.
Michael Charles Robbins, 39, was taken into custody after authorities found him inside the store with his clothing and hands covered with blood, police said.
Anderson police went to the Walmart Supercenter about 9:45 p.m. after receiving a report of the stabbing, acting watch commander Robert Modin said.
Carlos Zamora, 56, told police Robbins stabbed him with a knife several times in the chest and face, Modin said.
Officers found Robbins inside the store with a "copious" amount of blood on his clothes and hands, Modin said. Anderson officer John Nevens, who remembered Robbins from his arrest for animal cruelty, identified the suspect, Modin said. Robbins was arrested without further incident on suspicion of attempted murder and booked into Shasta County jail.
Zamora was taken to a Redding hospital for treatment.
Officers are still investigating.
In April, Robbins was sentenced to six months in jail, with credit for two months' time served, after pleading guilty to one count of felony animal cruelty.

A homeless man who pleaded guilty last month to one count of felony animal cruelty for kicking a 3-month-old puppy and breaking its leg was sentenced this morning to six months in jail.
Michael Charles Robbins, 38, who struck a plea bargain last month in exchange for the jail sentence, was also ordered to be on probation for five years and won't be allowed to possess an animal during that time.
He also forfeited the puppy, which has since been adopted by a new owner.
Robbins, who is in the Shasta County jail and received credit for about two months served, sat next to his attorney, Adam Ryan, while the sentence was handed down.
Before reading the sentence, Judge Dan Flynn said it was "striking" how accounts of what happened differed between Robbins and a good samaritan who came to the puppy's rescue.
"I think how an individual treats something in his care says a lot about his character," Flynn told the courtroom.
Robbins, who faced about three years and eight months in prison had he been tried and convicted, was arrested by Anderson police on March 2 after officers were called to the Balsam Way area where a man reportedly was refusing to leave the front yard of a residence and kicking a puppy.
Officers reported that when they arrived, Robbins was grasping the puppy by its neck with one hand and holding a 40-ounce beer inside a white plastic bag in his other hand.
Robbins set the Newfoundland mix puppy down when told to do so, and the puppy fell onto its right side, whimpered and held its left rear leg close to its body as though it were injured, police reported.
When asked why he was kicking the dog, Robbins denied having kicked it, police reported.
"I think my client has learned a great deal from the experience and is looking to better his life," Ryan said after today's sentencing, which took about 10 minutes.
After last month's incident, Robbins also said "sometimes puppies don't listen so you just have to make them move," police reported.
Prosecutor Michael Hemker said typically those prosecuted for animal cruelty don't get jail time, so today's sentencing is a clear indication that Shasta County doesn't take these matters lightly.
"I'm pleased that everyone took it seriously," Hemker said after the sentencing. "I think it sends a message that animal cruelty will be prosecuted, even as a felony."
The injured pup was taken to VCA Gateway Animal Hospital in Anderson for treatment and has since been adopted.
His new owner has created a Facebook page for Oliver, which can be found under Oliver Henley-McQuown, for those wanting to see his photos and obtain updates on him.
"I am the lucky person who had the honor of adopting Oliver," Elane Henley of Elk Grove wrote in a recent Record Searchlight Letter to the Editor. "Oliver is enjoying his new home. Michael Charles Robbins, 38, also will be on probation for five years and won't be allowed to possess an animal while he's on probation. He also has forfeited the puppy, said Shasta County prosecutor Michael Hemker.
Robbins, who faced about three years and eight months in prison had he been tried and convicted, is scheduled to be sentenced on April 14.
He remains in custody in Shasta County jail in lieu of $25,000 bail.

She said the puppy's fractured leg was realigned Wednesday afternoon. His splint is readjusted every week because he's growing so fast.
Frost said the puppy, who is named Oliver, has been adopted by a new owner and should be released to his new home in about two weeks.
"It's a very good home," she said.
About two dozen people attempted to adopt the pup after learning of his plight, she said.
She declined to identify the new owner, noting that Capt. Robert Kirvin of the Anderson Police Department made the selection.
