Case Updates: 2 update(s) available

An animal rescue organization is trying to find out who dumped three puppies in a drainpipe in Georgetown.

Ten-year-old Michael Hardwick was walking with a friend when they heard the month-old puppies squealing in a stormwater pipe in Georgetown on Sunday. Michael says the pups were in a bag in the back of the pipe.

He and the friend took the dogs to his grandmother's house, cleaned them up and gave them some milk.

A volunteer with Coastal Animal Rescue in Murrells Inlet is watching the dogs now. Officials hope they will be adopted. Michael says his family would like to keep one of the dogs.

Coastal Animal Rescue is offering a $1,000 reward to anyone who can tell them who dumped the dogs. People convicted of animal cruelty in Georgetown County can face a fine of up to $500 or 30 days in jail.

Case Updates

After a rocky start to life, three labrador puppies are resting easy in new homes. They've been adopted.

In January, Michael Hardwick, 10, found the trio abandoned in a bag in a Georgetown County drainage ditch.

Hardwick found them just in time.

"If they had been out there for a long time, they probably would have succumbed to hypothermia," said Dr. Meisen Mok with Coastal Animal Vet Clinic.

Finding the perfect family for Hershey, Jet, and Ka'la was important for the volunteers at Coastal Animal Rescue.

They've gone from abandonment and dehydration to plenty of love and care.

"We had a black lab that was found on the side of Interstate 95, and we had him for 16 years, so the story was very similar," said adoptive parent Marsha Eide.

Marsha and her husband Bruce live in Hartsville. They've adopted Jet, the mild mannered pup of the three.

"Been two years without, so now we got to retrain and deal with a puppy, but yeah, we're excited, and we got a couple grandkids, and they'll get to see him," added Bruce

Stephanie Mikalatos is excited to have Ka'la, formerly known as Old Yeller, join her husband and five cats. "It's good travel buddy, and that's so bad, extra sad. I just fell in love with him."

Phil and Joanne Cline adopted Hershey, the only girl of the group.

But while the spotlight is on these three, there are plenty of animals at shelters in our area that need homes as well.
