Please vote on whether or not you feel the sentence in this case was appropriate for the crime. (Be sure to read the entire case and sentencing before voting.)

weak sentence = one star
strong sentence = 5 stars

more information on voting

When you vote, you are voting on whether or not the punishment fit the crime, NOT on the severity of the case itself. If you feel the sentence was very weak, you would vote 1 star. If you feel the sentence was very strong, you would vote 5 stars.

Please vote honestly and realistically. These ratings will be used a a tool for many future programs, including a "People’s Choice" of best and worst sentencing, DA and judge "report cards", and more. Try to resist the temptation to vote 1 star on every case, even if you feel that 100 years in prison isn’t enough.

Case Updates: 1 update(s) available

A Mesa man and a Phoenix teacher have been arrested on suspicion of bestiality in an undercover Maricopa County Sheriff's Office sting targeting responses to Craigslist pet advertisements.

Patrick Stephen Trejo, 25, a music teacher at Raúl H. Castro Middle School in west Phoenix, and Keith D. Kiefer, 47, an unemployed handy man in Mesa, were arrested Thursday night, according to the Sheriff's Office.

The two suspects didn't know each other, but each had arranged to meet at a hotel Thursday night with a dog owner and a dog, Sheriff Joe Arpaio said Friday.

The dog owner, though, was an undercover deputy, he said. The suspects were arrested when they arrived at the hotel.

Cartwright Elementary School District in west Phoenix is the home district to Raúl H. Castro Middle School. District officials did not immediately return a phone message seeking comment.

Arpaio said investigators have found that some Craigslist advertisers are using key words in their ads that may attract people involved in bestiality. His office has been investigating the issue of bestiality since December.

Craigslist, the free and popular ad site, has been under criticism by law enforcement agencies and advocacy groups across the country for failing to screen out advertisements for prostitution.

Arpaio said MCSO has not contacted Craigslist about the bestiality problem. For now, the office will continue its investigation.

"This is a very unsavory situation," Arpaio said. "We haven't dealt with Craigslist yet on this. We're still working."

Arizona lawmakers adopted a bestiality law in 2006.

Case Updates

A former music teacher who pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor count of conspiracy to commit bestiality was sentenced to one year of supervised probation.

Patrick Stephen Trejo, 25, was sentenced in Maricopa County Superior Court Wednesday morning.

Authorities said Trejo used Craigslist to connect with dog owners.

Trejo is one of two men arrested in February during an undercover investigation by the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office. Trejo and Keith Kiefer, of Mesa, were taken into custody after they agreed to meet who they thought was a dog handler and canine in a hotel room.

Trejo is undergoing court-mandated counseling and attended a class regarding dangerous behaviors, according to the sheriff's office.

He is not permitted to possess animals during this probation.

Trejo was a music teacher at Raul H. Castro Middle School in Phoenix at the time of his arrest. Trejo lost his teaching career as a result of his conviction.

Kiefer was sentenced in June to two years' probation after pleading guilty to conspiracy to commit bestiality.
