Nearly 200 cats found abandoned
Lehigh Acres, FL (US)

Incident Date: Wednesday, Dec 8, 2010
County: Lee

Disposition: Alleged

Abuser names unreleased

Almost 200 cats were found abandoned inside a Lehigh Acres home. Almost a month later, all of those animals have now been adopted out. But the investigation has come to a halt.

The cats were captured, crated and carted off from the Lehigh home.

Investigators with Lee County Animal Services say the man who lived there passed away, leaving them looking for his wife and mother.

After weeks of searching, they have answers - but not the ones they were looking for.

The man's wife and his mother are gone and living with family in another state.

It took Animal Services more than a week to track them down - only to be told they won't be back and are seeking mental help.

"The home is in foreclosure and I'm told they're not coming back," said Adam Leath, of Animal Services. "If we were to extradite them - it's not something that is generally done for animal cruelty charges - it would certainly be an additional expense."

He explained it would be an additional expense that Animal Services can't take on because it has already put out $30 a cat for the spaying and neutering 175 cats captured near the Kanuga Street East home.

"It came to a little over 6-thousand dollars for the case," said Gloria Letrell, also with Lee County Animal Services.

But, she said, that money helped every kitten find a new home.
