Dog shot with bow and arrow
Pendleton, OR (US)

Incident Date: Saturday, Dec 18, 2010
County: Umatilla

Charges: Felony CTA, Felony Non-CTA
Disposition: Alleged

Alleged: John Patrick Mabry

Pendleton police have arrested a man for shooting an arrow into a dog Sunday.

Local veterinarians had to euthanize the injured animal, Pendleton Police Lt. Bill Caldera said.

John Patrick Mabry, 25, of Pendleton, faces initial charges of first-degree aggravated animal abuse, first-degree animal abuse and unlawful use of a weapon. The first and last charges are Class C felonies in Oregon. Police booked Mabry into the Umatilla County Jail in Pendleton, where he remains in lieu of $17,000 bail.

Caldera said police received a call Sunday at about 9:30 a.m. regarding animal abuse at 123 1/2 S.W. 17th St. An officer investigated and found a dog that had been shot through the hind quarters with an arrow.

"Apparently the dog had come into his yard, and he went outside and shot it with an arrow," Caldera said.

Mabry told officers the dog had been defecating in his yard, Caldera said, but the dog "didn't appear to be aggressive whatsoever." Caldera also said Mabry used a bow and arrow that were rigged for fishing.

The dog was a pet and belonged to one of Mabry's neighbors, Caldera said.
