Dead dog found in ice chest
San Antonio, TX (US)

Incident Date: Monday, Oct 11, 2010
County: Bexar

Disposition: Open

Suspect(s) Unknown - We need your help!

A San Antonio police officer patrolling an area south of downtown known as a dumping ground for stolen vehicles made a gruesome and unusual discovery Monday morning. He found a black plastic bag covering a rectangular object on the street.

The officer wasn't sure what was inside when he stumbled upon it around 2:30 a.m. at Ralph Avenue and Nogalitos. However, bound by duty to investigate, he had to open the large package. He feared someone may have decided to use the frequented stolen dump site to get rid of a human body, so he cut the plastic.

The officer reportedly could see what appeared to be a new ice cooler. Turns out the remains did not belong to a dead body, but the contents were no less disturbing for an officer who is a dog owner. He found the remains of decomposing dog wrapped up in a tarp.

The officer called for Animal Control Services to come get the carcass. He suspected this to be a possible case of animal cruelty.

"Someone went through a whole lot of trouble to just get rid of a dog," he said. "It doesn't look like this dog died today."

It's unclear if there will be an extensive probe into the dog's death. Ironically, the animal was left several feet from a sign warning people not to dump in that area.
