Two dogs found sick and emaciated
Meriden, CT (US)

Incident Date: Friday, Dec 3, 2010
County: New Haven

Charges: Misdemeanor
Disposition: Alleged

Alleged: Carla Roberts

Case Updates: 1 update(s) available

A Meriden woman has been charged with two counts of cruelty to animals for allegedly not feeding her dogs, police said.

Carla Roberts, 47, 441 Center St., was arrested in Middletown on Dec. 3 after it was discovered her two dogs were sick and emaciated, police said.

The dogs, described as Doberman mixes, had not been fed and lost a substantial amount of weight, according to Lt. Heather Desmond.

The animals' vertebrae and ribs were clearly exposed, she said.

The dogs were taken from Roberts and are in police care, Desmond said. They are gradually getting better and are ready for adoption.

Anyone interested in adopting the dogs is asked to call Gail Petras, the animal control officer in Middletown, at (860) 344-3298.

Roberts is scheduled to appear in court to answer the charges on Friday.

The city has seen multiple animal abuse cases over the past year.

In July, Joseph Bartolotta, 106 Frisbie St., was arrested after an area veterinarian informed police of a possible cruelty case.

Police say Bartolotta neglected his dog by ignoring her illness and refusing to seek veterinary care until the animal was near death, according to the arrest report.

In April, Police charged Victor Serrano, 23, of Town Colony Drive, with cruelty to animals after he reportedly slapped his girlfriend's Chihuahua and killed it.

Case Updates

Two Dobermans taken in by city police after their owner was charged with abuse are doing well, according to the city's animal control officer.

Both dogs have gained nearly eight pounds and are living in foster homes, according to Animal Control Officer Gail Petras.

They are both being very well cared for, she said.

Carla Roberts, 47, who appeared in Middletown Superior Court on Friday, is being charged with two counts of cruelty to animals for allegedly neglecting to feed the dogs, police said.

Roberts, however, has said that is not the case.

"My dogs are being fed," she said earlier this week. "I never neglected my dogs."

Roberts said her dogs lost weight because they suffer from Lyme disease.

Roberts was staying with a relative in Middletown at the time of her arrest, which she says resulted from a complaint by a family acquaintance. After speaking with police, Roberts voluntarily signed her dogs over to Middletown Police because she had nowhere to keep them, she said.

Roberts' case was continued to mid-January.

Anyone interested in adopting the dogs is asked to call (860) 344-3298.
