Six animals were removed from a Steele residence on Monday morning after a warrant was issued for possible animal abuse or neglect.

Caruthersville Humane Society investigators say that the four dogs and two cats were not being properly cared for.

"These animals are in some of the worst conditions that we have seen," said Erma Page, Caruthersville Humane Society manager.

"One dog was chained in the heat where it could only stand or sit, not lay down," said Page. "One dog was shoved in a kennel too small for it, out in the heat."

A third dog had major skin conditions and was severely anemic from flea infestation, according to the Caruthersville Humane Society.

"All of the animals had the worst flea infestation that we have ever seen," said Page.

One cat has no eyes after a serious eye infection and the other cat was extremely malnourished and weak.

"They were very dehydrated, malnourished and ill," said Page. "We were surprised that two of them made it through the night."

The animals are being cared for by the Caruthersville Humane Society until a disposition hearing set for this week.
