Suspect(s) Unknown - We need your help!

A baby koala which was shot with an air rifle north of Brisbane has lived through the night but vets say it still has only a 50-50 chance of recovering from its injuries.

The male joey and its mother were shot several times on a property at Morayfield.

The joey is in an induced coma and vets had feared it could die in the night. They are now expected to operate on the injured animal later today.

Queensland Sustainability Minister Kate Jones says the full force of the law will be brought to bear on those responsible.

"I am absolutely outraged that anybody would undertake this cruel act against a koala," she said.

"Harming a koala is a serious offence under the Nature Conservation Act in Queensland and a maximum penalty of up to $300,000 or time in prison does apply."

The RSPCA's Michael Beatty has urged anyone with information to come forward.

"You just can't have animal cruelty of a serious nature like this going on within the community," he said.

"The links between animal cruelty and other forms of abuse and violence are all too clear, so we need to catch the culprits responsible."
