Case ReportOn July 13, a Ring-billed gull received some much needed assistance from the Ontario SPCA Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre in Midland after being found with a 30-inch arrow through its body at a soccer field in Penetanguishene, Ontario. A member of the public discovered the gull in the soccer field at St. Anne's Elementary School and contacted the Wildlife Centre. Judith Wilson, wildlife rehabilitator at the Centre, rescued the stricken bird and brought it to the Wildlife Centre. Upon examination it was found that the arrow entered the gull's body under the left wing of the bird and exited under the right wing. Staff immediately began the arduous task of removing the arrow, which was complicated by the position of the arrow through the body in close proximity to vital organs. Once the arrow was removed, treatment for the bird's injuries was commenced and its condition has improved. The Centre is now cautiously optimistic for a full recovery.
