A 34-year-old man was charged Wednesday for allegedly running a cockfighting ring in the basement of his north-side home.
Police found five injured roosters and a fighting ring after a tipster pointed them to a home at 1618 Saemann Ave., said police Capt. James Veeser.
The ring was discovered March 11, and the male resident of the home, Lue Chang, was arrested Tuesday evening, police said. He is charged with maintaining a place used for cockfighting, a felony that carries a maximum penalty of 18 months in prison.
Police came to the home March 11 and talked to Chang's wife, who told police she was unaware of any cockfighting in the residence. Investigators then obtained a search warrant and went through the basement.
They found a wire circle ring 3 feet tall and 6 feet across that was littered with feathers and what appeared to be blood stains, according to a criminal complaint. Around the ring police found petroleum jelly" typically used to protect the roosters " and small nails that were apparently taped onto the birds' legs for the fights.
"In my career this is the first time I've ever seen this," said Veeser, a 17-year veteran.
When confronted by police, Chang claimed the roosters had been purchased for eating and egg production. He said the ring was for exercise.
Veeser said police don't know how long the fights have been occurring or who else may have been involved. The roosters had been at the house six months or less.
The birds were removed from the home by the Sheboygan County Humane Society.
Case UpdatesA 34-year-old Sheboygan man is due in court this morning for a preliminary hearing on allegations he ran a cockfighting ring in his north-side basement.
A judge will decide whether there is probable cause to believe Lue Chang is guilty of instigating animal fights, a felony punishable by up to 18 months in prison. Chang was charged March 18 after police say they found five injured roosters and a fighting ring in Chang's home, 1618 Saemann Ave.
The hearing will take place at 11 a.m. before Judge L. Edward Stengel.
Investigators responding to a tip searched the home March 11 and found a wire circle ring 3 feet tall and 6 feet across that was littered with feathers and what appeared to be blood stains, according to a criminal complaint.
