Hoarding - 49 dead cats dumped, 16 more at home
Converse, TX (US)

Incident Date: Wednesday, Jan 14, 2009
County: Bexar

Disposition: Not Charged

Abuser names unreleased

Guadalupe County investigators say they have identified the person responsible for dumping dozens of dead cats near the Guadalupe-Bexar county line.

Lt. Kevin Jordan said a Bexar County resident admitted to disposing of the animals at the location where they were found, along Lower Seguin Road.

The owner, who is not being identified, will face illegal dumping charges.

"It's a class B misdemeanor, and the person could face up to 180 days in jail and up to a $2,000 fine," Jordan said.

On Jan. 14, the sheriff's office received a call reporting several plastic bags containing 49 dead cats, which had been discovered by a passerby and reported to Guadalupe County Animal Control.

After an investigation, it appeared that the cats died of suffocation and disease.

Jordan said that, after asking for help from the community, the investigators received information that led them to the owner of the cats.

"We asked for the public's help and they responded and we were able to figure out what happened here," he said. "We wish to thank the public. We had enough of a response to track the person down."

Jordan said that the cats' owner seemed to be some kind of animal collector. The person admitted to euthanizing the cats because they were diseased. It was also found that there were 16 other cats, some of which were also diseased, still living at the house.

Because the cats' owner lives in Bexar County, Jordan said the case has been forwarded to the Bexar County Sheriff's Office.
