A labrador retriever is fighting for her life tonight in what animal services officials call the worst case of animal neglect they've ever seen. Unfortunately Lubbock Animal Services sees animal neglect cases pretty often, but none have been as bad as the lab now known as Molly. She's here now trying to recover.

Molly was found on FM 40 east of town, Starved to death and barely alive. Now the folks at animal services are determined to bring her back to health. Literally just skin and bones, ribs protruding, she hasn't been eating well. But she's been drinking water and even keeps that tail wagging.

Animal Services officials tell us it's obvious she was once a pet, so when she was dumped outside the county, she had no instincts to help her survive.

It's going to take several months for Molly to be 100%, and if she makes it, she'll be looking for a forever -- and loving -- home.

Case Updates

Animal Investigators are still looking for clues in a severe animal cruelty case involving a yellow lab named Molly. The dog was dropped off at the Animal Shelter last Thursday, looking emaciated, and near death.

A farmer found Molly on his property looking very sickly.

Investigators believe someone deliberately neglected the dog and then dumped her out in the country, to get rid of her.

Animal Services Director Kevin Overstreet says, "If you have a pet and you don't want to care for it any longer, please contact animal services, and we'll come out and pick the animal up or you can bring your animal out to us. We will do everything we can to put the animal into the Adoption Program and see that it gets a good home. Please do NOT take your animals out in the country and just drop them off. You are looking at the possibility of criminal charges if you do that."

Molly died shortly after being brought to the shelter.

Mister Overstreet says they hope to present this case to the District Attorney's Office by Wednesday, and that Molly's owner could face felony charges, punishable with up to two years in prison and up to ten-thousand dollars in fines.
