A detective from the Penobscot County Sheriff's Department and the Garland animal control officer seized 45 animals from a home in Garland.
Neighbors complained of animal cruelty at a house on Oliver Hill Road in Garland. After investigating the scene, authorities removed twelve dogs, fourteen cats, fourteen birds, four hamsters and one gerbil from the residence on Friday and Monday.
Mark McIntosh and his girlfriend, Jennifer Stanley, are being summonsed on animal cruelty charges and will appear in court in October.
McIntosh says he's an animal lover and that his pets are his family.
"I haven't been able to eat since," he said.
McIntosh says he helps nurture abused animals back to health - which might explain some of the animals' conditions.
Detective Robert Jordan with the Penobscot County Sheriff's Office responded to the calls.
"The condition was poor for the animals. Several of the dogs were very underweight, were visibly, you could see their ribs and backbones. A lot of the animals had flea infestation," he said.
The animals were taken to three different shelters across the state. They will be held until a decision is made in October whether the Garland couple has the right to get their pets back.
The Bangor Humane Society took in the birds and rodents from the Garland residence.
"Their cages were horrendous, incredibly unsanitary," Suzan Bell, Executive Director of the Bangor Humane Society said. References« ME State Animal Cruelty Map « More cases in Penobscot County, ME
