A mixed breed dog found by investigators tied to a fence in a yard infested with fleas and ticks has been nursed back to health, county animal services officials said.
Baby, a 2-year-old female hound and pit bull mix, has gained 14 pounds since investigators found the dog June 12 on property owned by Joyce Revels, Hillsborough County Animal Services spokeswoman Marti Ryan said.
Revels, 66, of 3404 Avon Ave. N., Tampa, had called animal services and said she needed a dead dog removed from her yard. When investigators arrived, they found the carcass of a dog under a plastic sheet in the backyard and Baby tied to the fence with a 3-foot nylon leash, Ryan said.
The dead dog was named Rambo, Ryan said.
The canines were not given food, water or shelter for some time and were ravaged by fleas, animals services Sgt. Pam Perry said. Revels may have overwhelmed with the care needed for two dogs, Perry said.
"You hate to see animals go through this sort of terror," Ryan said.
Revels, who could not be reached for comment today, was charged with felony cruelty to animals and confinement of animals without food and water, a misdemeanor. She was released June 14 from Orient Road Jail on $2,500 bail.
Revels wanted Baby back, but animal services was given custody at a recent hearing.
Ryan said the agency just wants to find a good home for Baby.
"She is very friendly, happy and social," Ryan said. "She seems very gentle with people and animals."
