Alleged: John Saunders

John Saunders, 66, of Hastings, faces 17 charges under the Animal Welfare Act in relation to his farm near Pukehou.

A warrant for his arrest was issued after he failed to appear in Hastings District Court yesterday.

Crown lawyer Jo Rielly, for the Agriculture and Forestry Ministry, said Saunders had indicated he was not fit to plea, but the ministry did not accept that.

The warrant will be acted on if Saunders does not appear in court by July 30.
