County: Nassau

Disposition: Alleged

Alleged: Jeffrey M Schure

An East Atlantic Beach man solved the problem of his neighbor's yelping dog: He shot it dead with a pellet gun, cops said.

"He found the dog's incessant barking to be annoying," Detective Sgt. Ronald Nesbitt said of Jeffrey Schure, 52, of East Atlantic Beach, who was charged with animal cruelty and criminal mischief. Schure, a self-employed financier, had been grilling in his backyard March 11, 2006 when he "snapped" and went to his bedroom, grabbed his .22-caliber air gun and shot his next-door neighbor's 2-year-old Jack Russell terrier, Duffy.

When the dog's owner, Maura Walsh, 62, returned from a trip to the beach, she found her pooch dead on her back patio and blood droplets on the concrete. An autopsy by her veterinarian found a pellet had pierced the dog's left lung.
