County: McClain

Disposition: Alleged

Alleged: Woman

Young County authorities are investigating a Newcastle woman after they seized 13 starving horses from her home. This may be some of the first food these horses have eaten in a week. Deputies seized 13 horses from a Newcastle woman on December 6, 2005 and found them in deplorable conditions. A veterinarian examining the animals says the horses are severely malnourished, and some of them appear to be suffering from an intestinal parasite. Many have potbellies due to a lack of nutrition.

Young County authorities are now caring for the horses and it could take weeks to nurse the animals back to health. They say the owner claimed she could no longer afford to take care of the horses.

The owner`s name is not being released pending the results of the investigation. If she is charged, the owner could face up to 13 counts of animal cruelty. The owner must appear in court December 21st to see if she can regain custody of the horses. The judge may decide not to grant this request and the Police could then auction off or put the horses up for adoption. The horses are undergoing tests.
