Abusers/Suspects:
Raymond Poore Jr
Case ReportA construction worker was shot fatally while trying to beat his dog to death with a shotgun, Winchester police said.
Police say the man called his wife, Debbie, at work Thursday and told her that their dog had bitten him and he intended to kill it. Police say the wife of Raymond Poore Jr. found him covered with dog bites and suffering from a shotgun wound to his abdomen. He died later at Winchester Medical Center.
Police say the shotgun must have gone off while Poore was using it to beat the 30-pound Shar-Pei. The stock of the weapon was broken and there appeared to be blood and dog hair on it. The weapon had a .22-caliber rifle barrel atop a .410-guage shotgun barrel and is used to hunt small game.
A Winchester animal control officer took custody of the dog. There's no word on how badly it was injured.

The dog, a female Shar-Pei named Bailey was euthanized at Debbie Poore's request.
Raymond Poore was 6-feet-2 and weighted 180 pounds with white hare to his shoulders. He was convicted in 2002 in Fauquier County of receiving stolen property, and was sentenced in April 2003 to 12 months in prison but was released early. He also had several misdemeanor convictions in Fairfax and Spotsylvania counties.
A previous girlfriend said she was not surprised to hear that Poore might have beaten the dog, given the way he treated her. He got into alcohol and violence. She would end up with black eyes, and he would choke and head-butt her. |
