A dead black cat was found duct-taped to a cross outside an Iowa City animal shelter, authorities said. The cat was found about 8 a.m. Monday in front of the Iowa City/Coralville Animal Care and Adoption Center.
It was not known if the cat was alive or dead when it was taped to the cross. It was also discovered to have a 6-inch slice down its stomach.
Goodman said the cat had no identification tags and no microchip, which typically is implanted in all shelter animals.
Goodman said the cat was discovered near the shelter's cat enclosure, with the 8-foot-tall cross, apparently made from an old door frame, leaning against a tree.
"It's Halloween," said Diane Webber, director of the Humane Society's Midwest office in Des Moines.
"For the most part, people try to do these things to black cats, but anymore they just find any cat. It's very sadistic," she said.
