County: El Paso

Disposition: Alleged

Alleged:
» Jennifer Hobbs Butler
» Robert Butler

More than a dozen dogs are in a better place now after being found sick and underweight.

The Humane Society of the Pikes Peak Region Cruelty Investigators seized nine adult German Shepherds and four puppies from Denali Kennels owned by Jennifer Hobbs Butler and Robert Butler.

The confiscated dogs are underweight and some have medical conditions. The dogs are currently under the care of the veterinarian at HSPPR.

The humane society says Jennifer Hobbs Butler was convicted in June 2006 of five counts of cruelty to animals and five horses were seized by HSPPR. The court ordered her to find homes for all her animals except the dogs that she breeds and given three years probation. After violating her probation, she was given three additional years probation.

HSPPR's Cruelty Investigators have been monitoring the welfare of the animals on her property since '06. When they recently became concerned about the welfare of the nine dogs, a warrant was issued and the dogs were seized on Thursday, December 16.

"This case is under investigation, we are discussing felony charges with the El Paso County DA because of Jennifer Hobbs Butler's prior cruelty conviction." stated Jan McHugh-Smith, President and CEO of the HSPPR.

The humane society says technically the dogs still belong to Butler, while the case goes through court, so they are not able to be adopted.

The Humane Society of the Pikes Peak Region is the largest animal shelter in southern and western Colorado, serving 34,000 animals a year in both Colorado Springs and Pueblo.
