County: Madison

Charges: Felony CTA
Disposition: Alleged

Alleged: Thomas J. Williams

An Edwardsville teenager has been charged with one count of aggravated cruelty to animals after authorities discovered one dog in his care suffering from malnutrition and the grave of a recently deceased canine in his back yard.

Thomas J. Williams, age 19 of the 300 block of Locust, faces the charge, which is a Class 4 felony.

Edwardsville Police responded to a call at 8:39 p.m. Thursday in reference to possible animal abuse on Locust Street.

At the scene, officers seized a female pit bull-type dog that appeared to be in poor health and suffering malnutrition, according to a statement from Edwardsville Chief of Police James Bedell.

In addition, police found the remains of another dog that had recently perished buried in the back yard.

The surviving dog was taken to Hawthorne Animal Hospital for treatment.

Williams was placed on a felony hold in the Madison County Jail and bond was set at $20,000.

As of Friday, he was still in custody.
