Case Report

The brutal stabbing of a Rottweiler in a Birmingham park was today described by an animal welfare officer as the worst act of cruelty she has ever seen.

The black and tan dog is today recovering from an operation to remove a six inch blade plunged into its chest in Sutton Park.

Miraculously the knife missed all his vital organs and arteries and the dog was on his feet walking when a park warden discovered him at about noon yesterday.

Birmingham City Council animal welfare officer Vicky Allwood said the attacker clearly wanted to kill the animal.

She said: "He is friendly and placid, noone did this in self-defence.

"We have never come across a vicious act of cruelty like this before. We're just appalled and shocked. If we find out who did it we will prosecute.

"It is a hunting knife had a six inch blade and six inch wooden handle, it was pushed in to the hilt and took some force to remove it. Whoever did it wanted to kill him.

"Luckily he is very stocky and muscular animal, the knife missed all the vital organs."

She added that despite the knife he was still walking and even leaped into the rescue van before being whisked to the nearby Park Veterinary Clinic for the operation.

Attempts are now being made to trace the owner. A woman from Erdington reported a Rottweiler missing last weekend and police were trying to contact her.

When the dog was discovered between Banners Gate and Long-moor Pool, there was no collar or identity tag.

Anyone who saw the attack or can help trace the owner should call police on 0845 113 5000.
