Sentence: On March 18, the seven students appeared in court after accepting the conditions of the deferred prosecution program. Each of the seven students will have to perform 100 hours of community service with the N.C. Wildlife Commission and the Mecklenburg Parks and Recreation Department. They also must submit to substance abuse and psychological evaluations and will undergo counseling if necessary. The students also won't be allowed to own any pets for the one-year term of the deferred prosecution program.

Under the program, the students must acknowledge their wrongdoing. If they abide by the program's conditions and don't get into any more trouble with the law during the next year, the charges will be dismissed. If they fail to meet those conditions, prosecutors can try them on the animal cruelty charges and use their admissions against them at trial.
