Sentence: Magisterial District Judge Joseph Zola sentenced Aileen Kulpon, 48, of Carbondale to 180 days in prison. However, that prison sentence is suspended and Kulpon can avoid jail, if while on five years probation, she continues to follow guidelines set by the court, Zola said in his courtroom.

Kulpon must not own another pet, must continue with counseling until her probation expires or she is released by her doctor, and must be subject to random checks by Luzerne County probation officers at her home and any other place she stays.

She also must pay $2,393.31 in restitution to the Luzerne County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals and $199.55 in court costs.

Sentence: Kulpon pleaded guilty to neglecting 28 cats living in deplorable conditions inside the McAdoo Heights home. Kulpon was fined more than $3,000 by Magesterial District Judge Stephen Bayer, Tamaqua. At the time, Bayer admonished the woman to stop hoarding stray cats. Details: Kulpon was charged in a prior case involving animals and was sentenced to probation about five years ago when officials responded to the same home for reports of a foul stench. The home was condemned at that time after 56 cats were found inside living in filthy conditions.
