Butler Police are investigating the report of a young cat beaten to death, and two animal welfare organizations are offering a $200 reward for information leading to an arrest.
Chief Bob Ball said there are juvenile suspects in the 8 p.m. Sept. 14 incident at the RFD feed mill on Elm Street.
Ball said it appeared the cat was beaten with an aluminum baseball bat. Lt. Tom Stortz is handling the investigation.
Kats-n-Kittens, an adoption and rescue organization, is offering a $100 reward for information, and the Mid-Ohio Animal Welfare League added another $100.
Cheryl Jarvis of Butler, Kats-n-Kittens president/director, said the cat was part of a feral colony that the organization has been working to manage by trapping and neutering.
"To have someone capable of doing an act that cruel -- it's sickening," Jarvis said.
"When children start that young killing animals, you have to wonder what kind of adults they're going to become."
Carla DeWitt, president of MAWL, said animal abuse often leads to abuse of people.
"Most violent offenders have a history of animal abuse, and if we can get help for these people in the early stages, we may be able to stop crimes against people," DeWitt said.
Anyone with information about the cat's death can call Butler Police at 419-883-2201 OR Jarvis at: 419-883-3244. References- News Journal - Sept 21, 2006
