Police are investigating what they say are signs of a dog-fighting operation based in east Charlotte.
No charges have been filed, but police say a probe into the case is continuing.
The investigation began after the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Animal Control Bureau was contacted Saturday about a dog fight in the 7900 block of Monfreya Court, near East W.T. Harris Boulevard.
When police arrived, they said five pit bull dogs at the residence were fighting with each other. Police say they separated the dogs, but they say one of the pit bulls broke free and attacked the others. According to police, several of the dogs suffered serious wounds, and one dog died.
Police say that when they were at the residence, they found evidence of a dog-fighting operation.
The owner of the dogs told several Charlotte TV stations that the animals were show dogs, not used for fighting.
According to police, they received information linking the case to another residence, in the 7500 block of Creek Ridge Road, about a mile from the Monfreya Court scene. Police say they seized unspecified items from the Creek Ridge Road residence.
Case UpdatesPolice have found more evidence in connection with a recent dog fighting case.
One dog was killed and four others were taken to an animal shelter after police say their owner used them for fighting.
Neighbors near a home on Monfreya Court say animal control officers took five dogs from the home last Saturday. Police found more evidence Wednesday at another home on Creek Ridge Road concerning the same case.
Dog fighting is considered a felony in 48 states including North Carolina. Those watching the fight would receive the same punishment as those responsible for it. | Source: News 14 - Sept 22, 2006 Update posted on Nov 3, 2006 - 4:45PM |
