The owner of more than 100 reptiles found in a garage has been charged with cruelty to animals. Animal control officers discovered the collection last weekend while on another call, said Rene Ball, a police spokeswoman.
About 11:15 a.m. Sunday October 22, the officers were sent to a home in the 3900 block of Betsy Crescent on a request to break up a dog fight.
The person who called was at the residence caring for the homeowner's pets.
While there, one of the officer discovered the collection of reptiles - including lizards, monitors and snakes, some of them of venomous - housed in the garage of the residence. Many were emaciated and were without water, Ball said.
Additionally, two young alligators were located and turned over to a biologist with the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries.
On Oct 24, the owner of the home, Sandra Ruth Burr, 52, was charged with animal cruelty and failure to provide adequate care.
She was given a summons and ordered to appear in court Nov. 28.
Authorities decided to let the reptiles remain in Burr's home until a judge determines their fate, but animal control officers are monitoring their care, Ball said.
