Two men were arrested and 17 pit bulls were seized on Nov 1 when authorities broke up a Warrenville animal fighting ring, police say. Arrested and charged with felony animal fighting were Aiken men William J. Gines, 18, of the 1200 block of Powell Pond Road, and Koran M. Sapp, 23, of the 1100 block of Herndon Dairy Road.
Detectives and animal control officers were tipped off about the dogfighting and found evidence at a home on the 100 block of Keith Drive that the two men were breeding pit bulls for fighting, said Lt. Michael Frank, spokesman for the Aiken County Sheriff's Office.
There were dogs fighting when officers arrived, he said.
Aiken County Animal Control seized the dogs, which included adults and pit bull puppies.
Lt. Frank said 37-year-old Monica Green lives at the Keith Drive home.
"The fighting was going on in a pen maybe a hundred feet behind her home, but she says she didn't know anything about it," he said.
The matter is still under investigation, he said. Detectives are also looking for seven to eight people who were watching the dogs fight Wednesday afternoon when authorities raided the home, Lt. Frank said.
Both Mr. Gines and Mr. Sapp were booked into the Aiken County Detention Center.
If convicted, the two could be fined up to $5,000 and sentenced to five years in prison. Case UpdatesAccording to the detention center, in addition to a crack cocaine distribution charge, Cornelius M. Simpkins, 18, of Keith Drive, is now charged with animal fighting. | Source: Aiken Today - Nov 18, 2006 Update posted on Nov 18, 2006 - 12:22PM |
