Animal ritual sacrifice
Wadesboro, NC (US)

Incident Date: Saturday, Sep 16, 2006
County: Anson

Charges: Felony CTA
Disposition: Alleged

Alleged: Annette Horne Griffin

Case Updates: 2 update(s) available

Investigators in Anson County think they may have a case of devil worship on their hands.

The groundskeeper at the Garris Grove Church cemetery outside Wadesboro found five dead animals on Sept 16, 2006. They included a decapitated goat and a sheep with its throat slashed. Blood was splashed on gravestones, and all the animals had their feet tied with orange string.

The sheriff calls it one of the most disturbing cases he's ever dealt with, and says even if it's not devil worship, it's still one of the most bizarre things he's ever seen.

The sheriff believes a group of people did it; he's asking people in the area to check whether they're missing livestock.

A Winston-Salem woman charged with killing animals at her mother's grave is expected to appear in court Monday in Anson County.

Annette Griffin, 60, says she was initiated as a Yoruba priestess in South Carolina, and part of the ritual involved sacrificing animals. The sacrifices happened in September at a church cemetery in the northern part of the county.

Griffin said she killed the animals on her mother's gravesite to call up her mother's spirit.

She has been charged with felony cruelty to animals, conveying animals in a cruel manner and defacing a grave or gravesite.

Sheriff's deputies in Anson County have arrested a person in connection with a number of dead animals found in a church cemetery.

Investigators arrested 60-year-old Annette Horne Griffin of Winston-Salem when she was buying more animals late Monday. They said they tracked her down through an ear tag left on one of the dead animals.

Griffin told investigators she's a Yoruba priestess and sacrificing animals is part of a healing ritual. She said she was calling up her dead mother's spirit by slaying the animals on her tombstone.

Griffin has been charged with five counts of felony cruelty to animals, five counts of conveying animals in a cruel manner and one count of defacing a grave. She has been released on bond from the Anson County Jail.

A groundskeeper at the Garris Grove Church cemetery outside Wadesboro originally reported finding mutilated animals last month.
