Stacey Wilbanks of the Houston Humane Society could smell the stench of animal feces before she entered a trailer home on Live Oak Lane in Chambers County on Saturday.
When she and others with the Houston Humane Society animal cruelty investigation team and Chambers County Sheriffs deputies entered the home near Dayton, what they found was a trailer filled with animals in what Wilbanks said were "deplorable" conditions.
The 15 cats and 10 dogs, which included a litter of 8-week old puppies, were left alone for an undetermined amount of time. It could have been anywhere from one day to 10 days, according to Wilbanks.
An 82-year-old woman who lives at the home was not present at the time of the animal rescue, said Wilbanks. According to reports, the woman has recently entered a nursing home. A neighbor reported the situation to authorities.
The animals are in various stages of infection, malnutrition, dehydration and disease. Three had no hair and many had sores from mange. Others had large, thick mucus coming out of their eyes and nose.
There was no food or water for the animals at the time the Houston Humane Society arrived at the home.
"The toilet was even empty" said Wilbanks.
It took workers about one hour and 20 minutes to complete the rescue from the house. Neighborhood MapFor more information about the Interactive Animal Cruelty Maps, see the map notes.
