An 89-year-old Des Moines woman was reported missing today by her guardian, according to a police report.

Dean Smith, of Des Moines, told police today that Mary Stenlund has been missing since June 12.

The Des Moines Register reported in July that Stenlund disappeared June 28 but was found the next day at Dairy Queen, located at 5415 Douglas Ave., after her daughter, Linda Wilson, turned herself and her mother in.

In August, Wilson was charged with neglect of a resident of a health care facility for that incident.

The report filed Friday said Stenlunds daughter and grandson, John Wilson, took her from a nursing home in Polk City to her daughters house at 4123 40th St. on June 12. It was not clear why a missing persons report was filed more than four months later.

A judge ordered Strenlund moved from her daughters house to a care facility in January of this year after the Department of Human Services determined living conditions in her the house were substandard.

At the time, police said there was garbage throughout the house, a refrigerator was infested with bugs and one of the bedroom doors was nearly blocked because of material on the floor.

Another report filed said police searched 4123 40th St. around 8:30 p.m., which was before the missing persons report was filed. That address is the residence of Stenlunds daughter, Linda Wilson. The report said at the same time police searched a house at 2731 51st St., which is the residence Stenlunds grandson, John Wilson.

The report does not specify why police searched those homes, but it does say that no one was home at the time, and a locksmith unlocked the front door of Linda Wilsons home. In the search of Linda Wilsons home, police found three animals that did not have food or water.

Two cats were inside and one dog was tied to a post outside in the rain, the report said. Police called the Animal Rescue League who took the three animals into custody.

The report said police also took several items from both residences that were searched, but police said that list of items is not available.
