The state attorney's office filed a criminal case this week against a local man whose horses were seized in August after animal control officers found them malnourished and with worms.

Georg Franz Suchy, 52, was released on $10,000 bail after authorities charged him with cruelty to animals.

Charlotte County Animal Control took Suchy's horses after he failed on two separate occasions to adhere to instructions on how to nurse the horses to good health. The county had a veterinarian examine the horses and advise Suchy about how to care for them.

"I tried to help him along the way," said Reannon Juergensen, an animal control officer for the county. "The judge will decide if he is allowed to possess horses in the future."

She said a court hearing has not been set for Suchy.

Officials said the horses were bony because they were malnourished, their teeth needed work so they could chew properly and their hooves were cracked.

Juergensen said Suchy thought he could not do any more for the animals.

"He did believe that he was doing the best that he could," she said.

Officials said Suchy was feeding the animals, but he was not properly supplementing their diet.

Suchy could not be reached for comment.

Brian Jones, a supervisor in the county's Animal Control Department, said he was glad charges were being pressed.

"I've been with animal control 10 years and we've had cases in the past where horses were not being taken care of. I can't recall one in recent memory with that many horses," he said.

"The Suchy case was a little extreme because it was so many."

In May, the county investigated Suchy after someone reported that the horses were skinny.

Animal control found 11 horses on the property in June, but when they returned less than a month later to examine the horses and see if Suchy had followed instructions on caring for the animals, only seven were left. Jones has said Suchy sold the other four horses.
