Authorities are seeking information that might lead them to the person responsible for shooting a cat with a bow and arrow on the night of Oct 23, leaving the animal mortally wounded.
The arrow, called a messy oak arrow, struck the cat on the left rear side. entering its rectum and penetrating the animal's chest, according to Berkeley County Animal Control Officers.
The cat, which was described as a male orange and white tabby, had to be euthanized because of the extent of its injuries.
"It was in terrible shape with the arrow stuck. It was not able to be saved." Animal Control Officer Michelle Kitts said Tuesday.
Kitts along with Animal Control Officer Chris Lyons and Martinsburg City Police Officers responded to Rothwell Avenue just north of the intersection of North Queen Street and Moler Avenue at about 7:50 p.m. Monday after a caller reported that there was a cat walking down the street with an arrow sticking out of it.
Kitts said the cat crawled up into the caller's car and curled up on the floorboard of the car, where it was warm.
"We tried to locate an owner for it. We think it's just a community cat," Kitts said. "It was very well taken care of."
Patrolman Ron Bleigh of the Martinsburg City Police Department is assisting Berkeley County Animal Control officers in the animal cruelty investigation.
Berkeley County Animal Control released photographs of the cat Tuesday with the hope that it might generate leads in the case.
The photographs were taken after the animal had been injured and show the wound the cat sustained from the arrow.
