Llama shot to death Yulee, FL (US)Incident Date: Saturday, Sep 30, 2006 County: Nassau
Disposition: Open
Suspect(s) Unknown - We need your help!
A Nassau County Farm will pay $1000 for information leading to the arrest of the shooter who killed a fenced-in Llama.
The Llama's role was protecting a small herd of Red Stags in a five acre pen at the Wild Creek Plantation.
"He was like a guard dog," said caretaker George Loughman.
"He would walk the fence. You can see inside the fence (where a trail is worn in the soil) where he goes all the way around the fence. If any wild animal gets in there he would probably stomp 'em or whatever it took to get rid of 'em!"
Loughman says like a stalwart soldier, the llama would stay at the fence. Ever vigilant. Ever protective. A sign of strength.
"Cause when I'd come in here and see him standing there I knew everything was all right inside that pen."
But now there are only tufts of wool on the ground where George found the llama dead last week.
"I miss him. He ain't there no more. It's just like somebody's taken your best friend!"
At first they thought wild dogs got in.
"But we got in there and we finally rolled him over and we found a bullet hole right through his chest -- it come out the back of his hip," said Loughman.
Asked what kind of person would shoot an innocent fenced-in animal?
Loughman frowned.
"Sick. A sick person. Cause that llama wouldn't hurt nobody as long as they didn't bother him!"
And now the farm is offering a cash reward, hoping someone, somewhere will provide the information to bring the shooter to justice.
"We're offering $1,000," said Loughman.
"We want someone to talk. Someone to tell us who did this."
