A reported case of animal cruelty and neglect hit a Columbus neighborhood and residents said they've witnessed more than two dozen cats around a house and its driveway.
Upon arrival to the east-side Columbus home, news cameras caught footage of the resident carrying a dead cat in a bag. Just a few feet away was another dead cat.
Karen Paneth lives down the street from the home and said she has seen cats laying all over the driveway and on top of the resident's car.
Paneth said she and her neighbors have counted more than 24 cats at one time. She said she believes the woman that lives in the house is harboring a population of undomesticated felines.
"It is really sad to see the cats is states of illness, probably not being fed well and left to just keep breeding," Paneth said.
Most residents in the area said they knew about the so-called cat house.
An inspector from the Capital Area Humane Society was alerted to the home because of the deceased cats lying outside. During the inspection, the humane officer found another dead cat, Alvarez reported.
"I think the concerns here at this particular address are that the cats are just continually breeding and causing the community a nuisance," said Jennifer Kulina, of Capital Area Humane Society.
During the search, the tenant decided to surrender all of the cats to the humane society.
"The most important thing right now is we have to look at the cat (overpopulation). We've got to do something together to make sure animals aren't suffering," Kulina said. Neighborhood MapFor more information about the Interactive Animal Cruelty Maps, see the map notes.
