On Thursday, October 12, a felony cruelty to animals warrant for the arrest of Lee Robert Merritt was issued.  Mr. Merritt had confessed to shooting a 10-month-old border collie puppy on October 11. He said the puppy entered his yard. She approached his teenage son, who was kneeling near by, and growled at him. The son stood, walked past the puppy and went inside to tell his father. Mr. Merritt came outside and saw the puppy. He went back outside with a .44 caliber deer rifle, shot at the puppy twice, and hitting her once. He saw her limp off.  Merritt apparently claimed that the puppy had been chasing his cats.

He then called a neighbor who lived in the direction the dog went. He told them that he had shot a black and white dog that had limped off. He told the neighbor that if they saw the dog to contact him, he would take care of it. The Jones County Animal Control said they did not receive any complaint from Mr. Merritt. They have no record of complaints from Mr. Merritt at all for the past month. The sheriff department had no record of a complaint.
