Denison Police are investigating a case of animal abuse that occured on the night of Oct 15. Residents found a dog, left to die, in the 600 block of West Sears Street in Denison. They immediately called police.
Denison Police called the Denison Animal Hospital to come out and look at the dog. The two year-old mixed breed was impaled by an eight inch piece of rebar.
Doctors immediately removed part of the rebar with box cutters. Then, they took the dog to the hospital, and put him on pain medication and antibiotics. Doctor Billy Martindale said it is their right to euthanize the dog if they wish, but instead, they decided to perform surgery and save the dog.
One of the workers at the hospital just lost a pet a month ago. She'd been looking for a new pet to fill the void, and found that pet, in this special animal. Trina Gray said, "We're probably gonna call him Rebar because that's gonna cause people to ask why, and then we'll be able to say because there's animals out there that are being mistreated and they're being abused, and my dog was tortured. People need to be aware that that kinda stuff happens."
Dr. Martindale added, "The malicious cruelty of doing something like this is just not acceptable."
Rebar also had some other issues that are common in stray dogs. He had heart worms, and intestinal parasites. But now, he's on his way to making a full recovery.
Animal cruelty is a felony. If you know anything about the abuse of this animal, you're asked to contact the Denison Police Department. Neighborhood MapFor more information about the Interactive Animal Cruelty Maps, see the map notes.
