more information on voting

When you vote, you are voting on whether or not the punishment fit the crime, NOT on the severity of the case itself. If you feel the sentence was very weak, you would vote 1 star. If you feel the sentence was very strong, you would vote 5 stars.

Please vote honestly and realistically. These ratings will be used a a tool for many future programs, including a "People’s Choice" of best and worst sentencing, DA and judge "report cards", and more. Try to resist the temptation to vote 1 star on every case, even if you feel that 100 years in prison isn’t enough.

Authorities are seeking answers in what they called an atrocious animal cruelty case. The Animal Rescue League said Chance, a 1-year-old pit bull, was left for dead in a Dumpster with puncture wounds to the neck on Oct 16 behind Longo's Bar along East Warrington Avenue.

Video surveillance shows that just after noon, a dog was heading down the alley behind Longo's. Shortly after, a man followed behind and minutes later, was shown dragging the dog back up the alley. "I think whoever owned the dog was over here for a dog fight, and the dog got loose in the meantime, and he dragged it back to wherever he was going," said humane Officer Kathy Hecker. "They had the fight. His dog lost. He got disgusted and threw it in the garbage."

A worker at Longo's is credited with saving the dog's life.

"I went out to empty the garbage and found it in there," said Steve Evans, a worker at Longo's. "If I wouldn't have found it, you never know; it might have just died in there."

"This case is disturbing because it shows what little respect for life whoever did this has," said ARL Executive Director Charlotte Grimme. "Not only was this poor creature abused, it was simply discarded as trash."

The Animal Rescue League, along with Animal Friends is offering a $1,000 reward for anyone with information leading to the conviction of the person responsible.

Case Updates

Reginald Coleman pled guilty to a reduced charge of misdemeanor animal cruelty on May 3, 2007, in Allegheny County Court of Common Pleas. The conviction stems from an incident last fall that was described by authorities as an "atrocious case of animal cruelty".

On October 16, 2006, a severely injured dog was found left for dead in a dumpster behind Longo's Bar. A worker at Longo's is credited with saving the dog's life.

"This case is disturbing because it shows what little respect for life whoever did this has," said Animal Rescue League Executive Director Charlotte Grimme at the time. "Not only was this poor creature abused, it was simply discarded as trash."

According to court records, Coleman was sentenced to 5 months in jail and 6 months probation. Records do not indicate that he is prohibited from owning animals or required to complete counseling.

A man accused of severely beating a pit bull and putting it in a Dumpster faces a court hearing on Dec 6. The dog, named Chance by shelter workers, has recovered and has been placed in a new home.

Reginald Coleman, 18, of Industry Street, Beltzhoover, was arrested Dec 2 by Pittsburgh Police Officer Christine Luffey, who had a tip from a concerned citizen.

Mr. Coleman "made a full confession," according to a news release from Animal Friends, whose humane officers also investigated.

"Mr. Coleman stated that he was angry at the dog for soiling in the house," the release says. The man reportedly beat the young brown and white dog with a belt and a board and then stabbed him.

Mr. Coleman told police "that since he thought the dog was going to die, he left him in the Dumpster."

Mr. Coleman is charged with animal cruelty. He faces a possible fine of $1,000 to $20,000 and a possible prison sentence of up to two years. He was in the Allegheny County Jail. His hearing is scheduled for 8 a.m. Dec 6 in City Court.

The dog was found in a trash bin in Knoxville on Oct. 16. The dog was taken to the Animal Rescue League of Western Pennsylvania in East Liberty, where he received emergency care, a name and ultimately a new owner. A shelter spokesman said the dog is doing well in his new home.
